When you first get your dentures, you’ll probably be shocked by the incredible realism they have to offer. Modern prosthetics are startlingly realistic, meaning that when you get yours, it won’t be long before you can imagine that they’re your real teeth.

You might even wonder if that makes it possible to keep your dentures on around the clock. Here’s what you should know about that prospect, and about caring for your prosthetic in general.

Can I Wear My Dentures 24/7?

While your dentures may certainly feel comfortable enough to keep on at all times, the fact is that just keeping your prosthetic on puts a lot of pressure on your gums. It’s also common for dentures to develop bacterial deposits, which can lead to serious gum disease. For these reasons, leaving your dentures on all the time will lead to a dramatic increase in denture sores, bad breath, and infection.

You should make it a point to take your dentures off occasionally. This will give your gums an opportunity to rest and to clean your prosthetic thoroughly.

When Should I Take Off my Dentures?

Obviously, you’re going to have to remove your prosthetic in order to brush it, which you should do daily. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a cleaner designed for dentures in order to keep your prosthetic in good condition.

It’s recommended that you take off your dentures every night while you sleep. Your dentures won’t do you any good during this time anyway, which means that it’s an excellent opportunity to give your gums a rest.

It’s also a good idea to soak your dentures in a specialized cleaning solution overnight. In addition to regular brushing, this will keep your prosthetic nice and clean as well as allowing your gums to rest.

The Implant Denture Caveat

If you’re not happy with the idea of having to remove your dentures each night, you might be interested in a fixed implant prosthetic. This involves attaching your prosthetic to a set of metal posts that are surgically implanted into the jaw.

Implant dentures don’t have to be removed for cleaning, as well as offering patients greater bite strength and stability. If you’re curious, talk your dentist about whether this could be the right option for you.
