Since the aligners are metal-free and removable, it’s safe to say that Invisalign is much less of a hassle than other orthodontic treatments, like traditional braces. That said, it’s a good idea to read up on what life with clear aligners is actually like. That way, your transition into life with braces is as smooth as possible. With this in mind, keep reading to learn six facts you should know before getting Invisalign!

1. You Need to Wear Your Aligners for 20+ Hours a Day

Invisalign doesn’t come with too many rules. There is, however, one important one: you need to wear your aligners for 20-22 hours a day. If you consistently miss this mark, then your teeth won’t move as anticipated, causing you to quickly fall off-track with your treatment plan.

2. Changing Your Diet a Bit Can Be Helpful

Patients with traditional braces usually have to steer clear of crunchy foods entirely, like whole apples and raw nuts. While Invisalign doesn’t come with any dietary restrictions, it’s a good idea to exercise caution with crunchy foods like these in an effort to avoid a broken attachment.

3. Any Soreness You Experience Will Be Temporary

When you first put on your trays, you’ll feel a distinct, but mild, soreness. The good news is that it’s only temporary, and it’s actually a sign that your teeth are moving! Plus, taking OTC pain medication, sticking to soft foods, and sipping on cool water should help alleviate this sensation even sooner.

4. You Need to Brush Your Teeth After Each Meal

If you put your Invisalign aligners on immediately after eating, then the residue from your food will get trapped against your teeth. This can quickly lead to decay, which is why it’s so important that you brush your teeth and clean your trays after each meal and snack.

5.12-18 Months Is the Average Treatment Timeline

Most of the time, patients need 12-18 months to progress through their series of aligners. Conversely, traditional braces can take two, three, or even four years (depending on the severity of the case, of course). So, there’s a good chance that choosing Invisalign will give you the results you want faster!

6. There Are Fewer Check-In Appointments

Since traditional braces need to be adjusted to apply continuous pressure, most patients need to carve out a block of time every month for orthodontic appointments. That’s not the case with Invisalign! Instead, your progress appointments will be every six or eight weeks.
